Chapel Hill Transit Bus Stop Mural

Installed 2019 Located at the bus shelter at Airport Gardens, Chapel Hill, NC

Artistic bus shelters provide access to art in a way that anyone who happens by that space can see it; making art more accessible to the community. Made possible by Chapel Hill Transit and Town of Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture, Calva was one of the artists chosen to customize a bus shelter. The design represents the shelter’s purpose, serving as an “umbrella” shielding us from rain and other outside factors.

Art + Transit saw their Artistic Bus Shelter opportunity as a way to provide everyday engagement with art and the community. Past artists have decorated Chapel Hill and Carrboro bus shelter windows with designs ranging from abstract murals to iconic Chapel Hill landmarks in a variety of mediums from acrylic paint to adhesive vinyl and screen prints.

Using a signature style and vibrant color palette, Calva weaves in raindrops to depict how one must face trials and obstacles in order to grow and bloom. Growth is a beautiful thing that requires effort and patience.
